Learning resources

The World Agroforestry Centre has developed a range of learning resources, most of which are publicly available or downloadable. In many cases, we also have printed versions of these resources.
Vegetative Tree Propagation in Agroforestry
Edited by Hannah Jaenicke and Jan Beniest (2002)
A training guidelines and reference manual that supports a short training course on vegetative tree propagation. The manual covers the concepts of vegetative propagation, tree nurseries, vegetative propagation techniques such as cuttings, grafting, layering and micropropagation, propagation experiments. The first part gives guidance to future course organizers and resource persons to facilitate the implementation of such course. Each topic has a ‘fast track summary', one or more theoretical lecture notes and descriptions of field exercises, practicals and demonstrations. Also available in French.
Data Analysis of Agroforestry Experiments
Richard Coe, Roger Stern and Eleanor Allan. Edited by Jan Beniest and Janet Awimbo (2002)
A series of four printed manuals and a CD-ROM. This has been produced as a collaborative effort between the Centre and the Statistical Services Centre of the School of Applied Statistics of the University of Reading.
Part 1 contains an overview of the course and teaching approaches, with suggestions on how the materials may be used and adapted. It also contains a summary of each of the 17 teaching sessions.
Part 2 contains the lecture notes, one for each of the sessions. They form a useful and readable resource in their own right and hence are presented as a separate document.
Part 3 contains suggested exercises for each session. These are also presented as a separate document as they are most likely to be adapted and modified to use local examples.
Part 4 contains a protocol describing each of 16 experiments, the data from which are used in examples.
Research Data Management
Peter Muraya, Cathy Garlick and Richard Coe (2002)
A manual and accompanying CD-ROM on data management in support of a short training course on the subject developed in collaboration with the Statistical Services Centre of the School of Applied Statistics of the University of Reading. Also this document provides guidance to trainers and learners and consist of 7 sessions; why worry about data management, designing a spreadsheet for research data, spreadsheet data entry and checking, why go beyond the spreadsheet, improving data querying efficiency, data modeling: organizing data for easier querying, building a data management strategy. Each session has a fast track summary, a lecture note and exercises.
Tree Domestication in Agroforestry
Edited by Tony Simons and Jan Beniest (2003)
A training toolkit in support of a short training course on agroforestry tree domestication. This course was developed over several years and benefited from the involvement of many resource persons. The first part provides general guidance to future trainers and learners and fast track summaries on the 17 sessions taught during the course under its 6 modules; introduction, tree selection, tree germplasm, tree propagation, tree evaluation and trees in the landscape. Parts 2 and 3 contain the lecture notes that have been developed by the various resource persons over the years and part 3 contains the slide presentations made in support of several topics.
Designing Participatory On-farm Experiments
Ric Coe, Steven Franzel and Carlos Barahona (2003)
This learning resource is an integrated and cross-referenced series of theme papers, a toolkit, a recommended reading list, case studies, suggested training activities and examples of timetables for training sessions compiled and organized to be used as a resource pack for training. It consists of a series of printed papers and a CD-ROM. The printed part does not include all the resources but the complete set is available on the CD. This approach allowed to make the pack more interactive and offers the user total freedom to adapt the resources to her/his own needs. A searchable database has also been developed to help the user finding case studies and training activities for training in groups and individual learning. The searches are based on key words.
Training in Agroforestry - a Toolkit for Trainers
Peter Taylor and Jan Beniest (2003)
This toolkit has been developed to assist trainers and educators in planning, organizing and implementing training in agroforestry and is based on the participatory curriculum development approach and the Centre's long experience in agroforestry training and education. It consists of a 4-ring binder developed into three parts; participatory curriculum development, ten key elements related to training course design and useful resources for agroforestry training and education. The ten key elements are adult learning concepts, stakeholder analysis, training needs assessment, setting aims and objectives, choosing and using content, methods and materials, teaching and learning methods, training materials, lesson planning, evaluation and assessment, training event organization.
Mango growing in Kenya
Jurgen Griesbach (2003)
A practical guide on growing one of the more popular fruit trees in the tropics. The document covers uses and food value, botany, propagation, establishment, maintenance, production, maturity, flower induction, pests and diseases, and describes 31 popular mango cultivars, illustrated with colour pictures, that can be produced in different agro-ecological zones. Fruit trees are often a good first introduction to agroforestry for small-scale farmers in developing countries.
Improved fallows for western Kenya - an extension guideline
Benjamin Amadalo, Bashir Jama, Amadou Niang, Qureish Noordin, Mary Nyasimi, Frank Place, Steve Franzel and Jan Beniest (2003)
This extension guideline has been produced to promote the upscaling of the improved fallow technology in western Kenya. It describes the main agro-ecological and socio-economic characteristics of the region where the technology can be used, the concepts behind it, the type of fallows and fallow species, the establishment and management of the fellow and discusses benefits and adoption potential.
