Regional Agroforestry Day for Southeast Asia

With the theme, Towards a sustainable Southeast Asia, the day will bring together a range of experts to discuss how to apply what is known about agroforestry, identify what needs to be understood better, and how those involved can work together to create a sustainable Southeast Asia.

The event in Jakarta, Indonesia on 23 September is being organized by the World Agroforestry Centre in partnership with the Indonesian Forestry Research and Development Agency (FORDA) of the Ministry of Forestry.

It will open with the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the World Agroforestry Centre and the Ministry of Forestry.

The day provides an opportunity to consolidate many years of work on how trees outside forests on farms contribute to improving the lives of the poor and maintain a healthy environment. In addition, with the world paying more attention to the importance of forests and trees in mitigating the effects of a changing climate, bringing together experts to share knowledge and experience will further highlight the future importance of agroforestry.

"In the International Year of Forests, we must emphasize that forests don’t end where agriculture begins. With trees in forests decreasing, and trees on farmland increasing, agroforestry provides essential food and environmental services that also relieve the pressure on forests." Dennis Garrity, Director General, World Agroforestry Centre
